Introduction (who we spoke to and why it helps)
We spoke with a UK‑registered domestic electrician about common callouts, what homeowners can do before a visit, and the best ways to avoid repeat issues.
Common problems you’re called out for
- Tripping RCDs/MCBs caused by faulty appliances, damp outdoor circuits or damaged flexes
- Failed downlights or overheated lampholders in older fittings
- Broken switches/sockets, especially in high‑traffic areas
- EV charger, outdoor power and garden lighting installs
What homeowners can do before you arrive
- Identify which circuits trip (note which rooms go off) and whether it’s linked to an appliance being used
- Take clear photos of your consumer unit (inside and out) and any suspect fittings
- Clear access to the consumer unit, affected rooms, and loft if lighting circuits are involved
What can affect price and timescales
- Fault‑finding depth: Intermittent trips can take longer to trace
- Access: Loft work, furniture moves, and height restrictions add time
- Parts/spec: Fire‑rated downlights, smart switches, EV chargers all vary in price
Typical guides:
- Minor repair (switch/socket/light): £60–£120 + parts
- Fault‑find and repair simple trip: £80–£180
- Downlight replacements (per point): £40–£90 + fittings
Safety tips for homeowners (from the electrician)
- Test your RCDs quarterly using the test button; if they don’t trip, book an inspection
- Don’t overload multi‑way adaptors; spread loads and use quality extensions
- Replace damaged flexes/plugs immediately
- Bathrooms and outdoors need the correct IP ratings and RCD protection
When to book an inspection
- If you’ve moved into a new property without recent paperwork, ask for an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report)
- After significant DIY work affecting electrics
- If you notice burning smells, buzzing from switches, or discoloured accessories
Next steps
- Gather photos, note symptoms and when they occur
- Shortlist a registered electrician (NICEIC/NAPIT) and request a visit window
- Agree a simple scope and parts brand where relevant; get the outcome in writing
